Sister McGraw is trying to collect some baby clothes and items for a newborn baby boy in need. Specifically, if you have baby boy clothes 0-9 months, crib sheets, or other baby items you are willing to part with, please contact Sister McGraw to have them picked up or bring them to her at church this Sunday. Grab and sister and join us! This is not only for runners, there will be plenty of joggers and walkers. The route is 3.5 miles (5K). If that is an uninviting number, you are welcome to jump in and walk or run the last mile from the League City Library. There are sidewalks almost the whole way and the first mile has lots of shaded areas.

(we'll meet in the back of the parking lot or she said we could park in the burned down funeral home parking lot next door).

I am in desperate need to sell a couch by this Friday. My ex husband and I are closing on our old home this Friday and I have to sell our old couch by the time the buyers move in. It's a relatively new couch, purchased in 2006 from Sussan's. It's vanilla color, espresso legs, no stains (we never had children or pets), and custom upholstery. I paid over $800 for it, but I'm willing to sell it for $350, or best offer. I know there are several couples that are new to the ward, so I thought perhaps they could use the good deal. I am sure there are a few of you out there that share my obsession of knowing precisely where my pennies are (at least should be :)

After doing some research we started using Mint.com. Its a free service, legit and secure to manage finances and assets. You can link up all of your accounts and it provides a live feed of all transactions. And I LOVE that on one page I can see all my bank accounts, credit card, students loans, long and short term investments and property assets.

It automatically sorts your transactions (you can also set up your own parameters) or change what you don't like.

Anyway thought it was a great tool and kind of fun (if you consider budgeting...well fun)

Target is getting rid of their bulk items in the back of the store.(Target on 646) Things like toilet paper, laundry detergent, twin packs of cereal, ect. I got a box of 30 pack oatmeal for $3.88. It's $4.88 but I printed a $1 off coupon. Go to quakeroats.com and create a day to get $1 off coupon. Also for the cereal there is a $1.50 off coupon at coupons.com. Not "screaming good" deals but good!

Eat At Home Challenge

I thought I would share one of my eat at home meals for this week. I had a can of crescent rolls, chicken, cream cheese. Here's what I came up with...

4 chicken breasts forzen
1 8oz cream cheese
1 packet Italian dressing mix (maybe you could substitute the actual dressing?)
1 can cream of chicken soup
Combine soup,cream cheese,dressing. Pour over chicken in your crock pot. Cook on low 4 hrs.
Put a spoonful in each roll, roll them up and bake according to directions on package.
I also rolled mine in bread crumbs I had on hand.

And here they are...

I had some of the mixture left over so I will probably put it over rice or noodles another night. Yum! Share some of your meals!!

Thank you to everyone for coming to the ward Christmas party. I hope everyone enjoyed their "journey around the world." A BIG thank you to those of you who put together booths and helped with the food that night.
Speaking of food, here is the Sweet Potato Recipe EVERYONE is asking for:

Ingredients
2 (15 ounce) cans sweet potatoes
1/4 cup orange juice
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Place sweet potatoes in a 10x6 inch shallow baking dish and pour orange juice over.
In a small bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt; mix together and cut in butter. Sprinkle over sweet potatoes.
Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, sprinkle with marshmallows and broil until browned.

The batches for the party were x4 this recipe but it should come out the same.

Just a reminder that the ward Christmas party is THIS Saturday December 5th at 6:00 p.m. at the church. The theme for the night is "Light of the World" featuring Christmas celebrations from around the world. We are planning a very fun night of culture and food. Sign-up sheets have gone around the ward to give us a count of who is planning to attend, if you are planning on coming and have not let us know please e-mail me at kallie10_4@hotmail.com with the number of people in your family that will be attending, (we have only heard from a few families so far). As part of our celebrations from around the world we are going to have stations/booths featuring a specific country. We were hoping that those of you who have lived in other countries, or served as missionaries or in the military would be able to share with us those cultural celebrations. I have had only two individuals willing to help out. One from Cuba and another representing the Latino Culture. This is not hard, all you would need to do is bring some things that I'm sure you collected from that country to be displayed and either be there to tell about how Christmas is celebrated (from 6:00-6:45 p.m.) or write down (or find something from the web) something that people could read as they come to your country. You could also bring Christmas decor influenced by that country and small samples of food for people to try (but not required) If your country didn't celebrate Christmas tell us how they celebrated a different winter holiday like Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, New Year's, etc.
Here is what is needed:
1) RSVP so I know who is coming.
2) Volunteers to help cook turkey and ham, and volunteers to just warm food already prepared
3) Sign up to bring things to represent a specific country. I need to know before hand.
4)Come Saturday early to set-up your booth.
5)People to sign-up to bring your favorite dessert (if this represents another culture, all the better)
Please let me know ASAP so we can appropriately prepare.

Needed: small jobs & teen girls clothing

There is a sister in Kemah that has four kids and is in between jobs. They are having a difficult time making ends meet. They are trying to save up enough money to rent a small trailer by Christmas. She is willing to do any small jobs for a little cash. Laundry, housecleaning, ironing, floors, etc. Even $15 or $20 jobs would help this family tremendously.

They are also in need of used clothing in good condition. I am not 100% sure on sizes but I would say size 6-10 (women) for the girls and the little boy would be 3/4T.

"About Missy:
We came across this girl in our area loose about a week ago, collar, no tags, no microchip. We have called animal control, several vets and put out signs. No one seems to be looking for her, so its' time for us to find her a new home. We have been calling her Missy.

She is a Beagle, about 9 mo. old according to the vet. She has not been spayed and she does not bark or howl at all. We don't know if she was born that way or not. She makes very little noise at all. She seems to be mostly potty trained, has stayed in a kennel at night and while we were at work with no apparent problems. She weighs 18.7lbs. She does not have fleas or fecal worms, per our vet. We had her vaccinated with her first rabies shot. She is extremely sweet, very meek, but gets along well with other dogs (she has met 3 in the week with us and has done great with them all) and loves people and being in a lap. Not a picky eater, not food aggressive. She is still a puppy with some of those puppy tendancies. But we have found her to be a quick learner... she is already ringing the bell at our back door to go outside. She is really eager to please and responds well to verbal correction."

Clear Lake Plant Sale on Saturday

This Saturday, September 26th, is the annual fall Plant Sale put on by the local Master Gardners. They specialize in landscape plants adapted to live in the wonderful Houston climate. Prices are higher than local stores, but typically the quality is also much better. There will also be a selection of herbs, and the varieties are excellent! I have a several plants I got from the sale a few years ago that are still growing and I plan to get some more this year. One more thing, if you are from the north like me and you miss the spring daffodils, they also sell a small selection of bulbs that will grow here. They are not daffodils, but from the daffodil family I think - anyway they basically bloom clusters of small daffodil-looking flowers.

The gate opens at 8am for a plant preview class, and the sale starts at 9am. There are free classes on fall vegetable gardening and growing herbs given later in the sale. It is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about how to be a gardener in Houston. One word of warning - because of the high quality of the plants sold, this sale is wildly popular. A line forms out the gate before the sale opens, and checkout lines are pretty long. The fall sale is not as bad as the spring vegetable and fruit tree sale if I remember right though!

wanted: Stake Head Lifeguard - YW Camp 2010

We are searching for a sister to be our head lifeguard for yw camp next year. Jeannie Kubricht did a great job for us in the past few years but is unable to continue doing it for us. This person would need to get trained by Red Cross as a lifeguard instructor (who can train and certify girls to be lifeguards). We would pay for this individual's training out of our stake yw camp funds. She would also be responsible for training the yw who volunteer to be lifeguards (3 day training), running waterfront at yw camp and be responsible for her lifeguards during free time at yw camp. She might also be asked to help the nurse teach make-up CPR 1 morning at camp.

I received a rather large donation of clothes yesterday, and am offering any of you who may be interested the opportunity to pick through them, before they are donated to a worthy cause. There are both women's and girl's clothes, with the women's clothes primarily being tops, including sweaters, polos, dress shirts, and t-shirts, sizes M-L. The girl's clothes are from 4T and up, with a good assortment of jeans and shirts. The clothes appear in good condition, but will need to be washed. There are also several light jackets. Celebrate Apollo 40th Anniversary

There are some exciting things going on over the next couple of weeks as NASA and the community celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11 and the first men on the Moon! Here are a few I am planning to attend with my family. If you want to join us, let me know!

Rice University is partnering with Discovery Green park in downtown Houston to present films and activities from Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 19, culminating on Monday, July 20th from 4-9pm with Spacefest: 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing Celebration, an evening of activities including the “Driven to Explore” NASA mobile exhibit. Also Monday, July 20, 2009 @ 7:05PM is NASA Night with the Astros at Minute Maid Park, where they will be giving out Apollo 11 hats to the first 10,000 in attendance (hint, get there before the 7:05pm game start) and recognizing the 40th Anniversary of Walking on the Moon. We are getting a group together to go so if you want to try to sit with us or near us, contact Brandon or me ASAP so we can include you in our ticket order or let you know where our seats are! On Friday, July 24th from 6:30-10pm, Space Center Houston is hosting the Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Splashdown Celebration. Our Annual July 4th Clebration will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at League Park. The Mayor, City Council, and the Parks Board will be serving refreshments in appreciaton of the citizens of League City. There will also be live music, face painting and balloons. Downtown Houston
Fireworks will fly and tunes will fill the air at Houston’s star-spangled Fourth of July celebration, Freedom Over Texas with Fireworks Presented by Shell. This year’s event, saluting Houston’s military heroes and honoring the 40th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo XI Lunar Landing, will feature the largest land-based fireworks show in the nation, unbeatable entertainment and a lively outdoor festival. Admission is FREE. On Saturday, July 4, Clay Walker will ignite the stage and the concert will be followed by the largest land-based fireworks show in the nation, presented by Shell Oil Company and produced by the world-renowned fireworks artists from Pyro Spectaculars North by Souza. Both the concert and the fireworks will be televised live on KTRK-TV (ABC), Ch.13 from Eleanor Tinsley Park. Summer Heats Up with Host of July 4th Activities Across the Isle
What better way to celebrate Independence Day than with traditional dazzling fireworks, an All-American Parade, magic shows, a long day at the beach, an outdoor concert, and more?
Come Fourth and join in the fun at Galveston’s 4th of July Parade and celebration! Led by Parade Marshall and KPRC Local 2 Chief Meteorologist Frank Billingsley, the parade begins at 10am at the Galveston Railroad Museum on 25th Street, heads south and winds its way through historic downtown Galveston, from Postoffice Street to 21st Street, north on 21st Street to Strand, then west on Strand to 25th Street. The parade will be followed by a celebration of our nation’s birth at the Galveston Railroad Museum, 123 Rosenberg (25th) Street. The celebration will include musical entertainment by Sparky Koerner and a patriotic program hosted by Joe Huff of Galveston College. Saturday evening, July 4th, the Park Board of Trustees will light up the Gulf of Mexico with its annual spectacular fireworks show. The 25-minute fireworks salute to Independence Day begins at 9:15pm at 37th Street & Seawall Boulevard. Great viewing is available along most of Seawall Boulevard.
That same evening, you're invited to at well, dance the night away, and enjoy fresh night breezes on an authentic replica of an 1800-style Paddlewheeler around Galveston Offatts Bayou. Sunday, July 5th, Artist Boat Kayak Adventures will paddle Galveston Island State Park beginning at 10am. Friendswood
The Fourth of July Steering Committee and the City of Friendswood wish to invite all to participate in the 114th annual Friendswood Fourth of July Celebration on Saturday, July 4, 2009. The daylong celebration is packed full of entertainment, food and fun for the entire family. The theme for this year's celebration is "Family, Friends and Friendswood, a Standing Tradition".
The daylong celebration will kick off with the Grand Parade that will travel down Friendswood Dr. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the corner of FM 518 and Heritage Drive, and will feature over 100 entries from Friendswood and around the State of Texas.
The parade will conclude at Stevenson Park where rides, games, food, live entertainment and fun for the entire family will take place. Musical group The Zydeco Dots will be the featured entertainment along with a variety of patriotic performances throughout the day. The activities will begin shortly after the conclusion of the parade. Over 50 booth entries will provide the backdrop for the daytime activities, which are scheduled to conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m.
The Evening Program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be held at Friendswood's Centennial Park. This year's program should be one of the best family fun events for 2009. The Bellamy Brothers will headline the evening entertainment, and local performers will round out the evening program entertainment. A fantastic fireworks extravaganza will light up the sky beginning at approximately 9:20 p.m. The fireworks will be choreographed to patriotic music and is guaranteed to be one of the best fireworks displays in the Houston area.
Public parking will not be available at Centennial Park for the Evening Program. Spectators must ride the free shuttle service to gain admittance into the park. Shuttle Service will be available from Clear Brook High School, at 4607 FM 2351, and from Friendswood Community Church, at 2821 Parkwood Ave. Shuttle services will begin running at 6:30 p.m

I am planning on heading down to Palm Beach at Moody Gardens on Friday if anyone wants to join us. It is a lot of fun for the little kids and a nice way to cool down in this 100+ degree weather.

Kids 3 & under are free and general admission is $10.95. You can buy a season pass for $25. We have done that several times in the past and got a lot of use out of it.

3 brothers 3 sisters. I am the third child/third sister.

Just little Abner. He turned one in February.
5. What are some of the different places you have lived? Your favorite place? Why?
Oklahoma, New York City, Rexburg and Blackfoot Idaho, Portland Oregon, Bridge City Texas, Denton Texas. I think Oregon was my favorite place to live because it is so green, Portland is so walkably fun with lots of art and music. I loved my job there as a waitress, too.

7. Your favorite food? Hijiki Tofu Burgers come to mind

I don't know if it's one of my most embarrassing, but I hate when I get guilted into sending a forward on and then realize that I didn't check it out on Snopes or anything and a million people tell me it isn't accurate (especially when it is an old professor I never talk to anymore or someone like that who now thinks I am an idiot).
10. Share something about you that no one would know about.
Hmmm. I don't know why I volunteer this, but I was the mascot for my high school! I was a bird. A cardinal, and it was like being a Disney character, it was very fun.

I want to have a little farm in a traditional community with lots of family and good friends there. I'm not sure where it will be, but I want to dedicate much of my life to making it a wonderful place.

It used to be The Royal Tenenbaums (Rated R, sorry, but you shouldn't probably watch it without CleanFlicks around anymore), now I'm not sure. It's more like the little travelling entertainers family on The Seventh Seal now. Happy despite the wars and plagues :).

I've done lots of singles ward FHE. I'm glad that wont be my calling again. It was like trying to put on a three-ring circus every Monday night. My favorite was probably girls camp related. I don't remember what it was called.

Joseph Smith. He is the Gandhi-Mother Teresa-Martin Luther type person with all the truth and not enough people recognizing.
15. What brought you to our ward?
We needed to go somewhere where there was more construction work to do so that my husband can support us while preparing to build our future community. We really love it here.

I am looking at getting a wrap this time around. I can't believe how many options there are now. I am looking at the Sleepy Wrap. The reviews on Amazon are excellent, but just curious if anyone owns one. I think my major concern is how hot is it, because from experience there is nothing less appealing than wearing a black Baby Bjorn during a Houston Summer. Also let me know if you have had success with any other wraps or slings.

With most callings one is able to call upon a substitute to take a class or rely on another member of the presidency to fulfill those resposiblities. However as activities chair and hardly a committee (can you really call it a committee with only one person?) I am in need of some help. I will be gone over July 4th and need someone to plan and over see the combined breakfast activity with South Shore Ward. Otherwise we will have to cancel it. I know alot of you have been the activities chair before and do a WAY better job at it than I do, so e-mail me if you are interested in volunteering.

Temple Trip

The Relief Society Temple Trip will be held tomorrow, June 6th. We will leave from the Kroger parking lot (near I-45 and 518) at 7:30 a.m., in order to make the 9:00 a.m. session. Some sisters will be staying later for lunch and the bookstore, but there will be rides available to the sisters who want to attend the temple only. I have been contemplating cancelling my land line for quite some time, but for some reason I just can't bring myself to turn it off. I was wondering what others have to say on the subject. Jeff and I rarely use the land line and it is costing us $40 even scaled down to the basics.

Ward Choir Practice

I play with a city league softball team and in 2 weeks, we will be starting our summer season. We are short players and I was wondering if there was anyone that would like to play.
